east java

land of forests and volcanos ...

the east java region holds one third of java's land surface and has vast areas of dramatic landscapes. in order to protect and conserve the large expanses of untamed forest, jungle and wildlife, the indonesian government declared until now around 600.000 hectares as national parks, nature reserves and conservation forests. this region of java has a nature of great diversity to offer: there are white sand beaches, black lava rock beaches, vast forests areas with impressive water falls and rivers, tea- and coffee plantations, savannahs with their special wildlife and of course the many volcanos - both active and dormant - that make you feel like being on another planet...

DESCRIPTION:

starting in denpassar/bali the flight lasts not more than half an hour to situbondo, a typical javanese town close to the northern coast. great traditional javanese food is one attraction here, but also the pasir putih beach with colourful jukungs and sparkling blue sea. local activities include wind surfing, snorkeling, sailing a traditional boat or exploring the coast by canoe. in october the 'petik laut' can be visited, a traditional feast for fishermen held to ask for the god's mercy and blessing in order to get prosperity.

situbondo is also a perfect place to do a day excursion to the dramatic scenery of 'kawah ijen', a crater lake and the largest highly acidic lake in the world. the contrast in landscapes here is great, as coffee plantations, waterfalls and hot springs surround the so repellent environment of the crater itself. on the way up you'll certainly see the workers for the local sulphur mining cooperation hand-carrying sulphur-laden baskets from the crater floor.

from situbondo the route goes west through the probolinggo region. on the way there's some great river rafting to do, just where the winners of the last indonesian rafting championship train.

the highlight of probolinggo and the entire trip is certainly the visit of the 'bromo-tengger-semuru-national park'. with 800 km2 this park contains the largest volcanic region of the province as well as the highest peak mount semuru (3676 m). the trek by walk, horse or jeep goes through forest plantations in the lower parts and a lunar landscape closer to the craters. the view over the active crater of mount bromo, it's dormant twin mount batok and the 10 km wide 'sand sea' is specially mystic in the early morning mists. the most spectacular experience is anyway to start early enough to see the sun rise on top. it's a spectacular experience.

not far from the bromo area is madakaripura, a sacred visiting area with a spectacular waterfall hidden at the end of a deep valley in the foothills of the 'tengger range'. 7 water-cascades pour from the dense forest 200 meters down - an amazing and refreshing view after a day on the volcano.

the tour ends with two city-visits. first to malang, a medium-sized town influenced by former dutch colonialism and finally surabay, the second largest city in indonesia, from where the plane goes back to bali.
